David W.'s Story

Life I retired in 2003 after a 26 year military career in the U.S. Army (Sergeant Major) and a proud veteran of Cold War Europe (3 tours), Gulf War I, Somalia (BLACK HAWK DOWN I was there), Haiti, Bosnia SFOR, and Macedonia KFOR. More specific detailed are mentioned later on. I was a Board member and a volunteer at the Salado Public Library in Salado,Texas. I enjoy giving of my time to make the library experience a positive one as we continue to improve the facilities. I have my BS degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland. Go Terps! I love the fact that I can get up and go on my Harley Ultra Classic or Fat Boy. As I travel this great country as a proud American. I am currently remodeling my house in Salado, Texas, a volunter and board member (2 Yrs) with the Salado Public Library. School I am glad that my Father was around and did his best to keep us boys out of trouble. He made Brian and I take various courses to broaden our horizon and make us better prepared for the future. Now in his 90s he is still one of the smartest people I known. Looking back it is clear that I made very little effort to do well in the classroom. Math always came easy to me. Some how I still managed to graduate in the top third of my class. I wish I had had half of Brian's athletic ability being a runt as a freshman (5'4" /88 lbs) or as skinny my sophmore year (6"/120) probable did not help. In comparison High School sports: As a very strong and fit 6' 158 lb senior, I went out for the wrestling team. I had to deal with the good old boy network and pay my dues dealing with the heavier weights in practice. I even got a couple pins against the 188 puonder that went to the state championships. Those in the lighter weights blamed me for ruffing them up. and avoided my requests to wrestle off. The varsity coach's had his favorates. To help the JV team I wrestled at 170 (I only weight 160) with a record of 12-1. The only lose was a result of me pinning myself. College After High School, I enrolled at Middlesex Community College for wrestling with a degree program of Mechanical Engineering and a major to the gameroom developing my pool and cards playing skills. I was doing well competing against fromer state champions until I tore my right rotory cuff during practice. When I landed hard on my right shoulder on the wood floor instead of the mat After a year I transferred back to Sommerset Communty College in Bridgewater majoring in Accounting/Business Administration. I earned nearly 60 hours but did not complete my AA. In the Army, in 1984 I earned a AA in Liberal Arts from Central Texas College (CTC), Killeen, TX . In the summer of 1981, I completed training to become a computer programmer and systems analyst. I was sent to the land of great beer Stuttgart, Germany spending the rest of the 80s there in several different organizations. If the wall had not come down. I might have never left! In December 1990, I returned stateside to Fort Huachuca, AZ. An made preparations for deployment to the first Gulf War as the Theater Network Manager for the Data Defense Network (DDN) for Southwest Asia I stayed until February 1992. I installed data and commo networks links along the Kosovo border prior to the start of the KFOR air operations. Enjoyed five weeks in the Czech Republic on the first ever NATO exercise in a former Soviet block country. In August 2000, I returned to Fort Hood, Texas the largest military installation in the free world. As the Battalion Sergeant Major, 1114th Signal Battalion and the Directorate of Information Management (DOIM) we provided all telephone and computer support to over 60,000 workers covering over 300 square miles of the Fort Hood Reservation. 30 September 2003 was the day that I officially said goodbye to the Army after 26 years of faithful service. It was time with all my various medical conditions catching up on me.
